Fire at Mayde Creek High prompts evacuation
Authorities are investigating the cause of a small fire in an upstairs boys' restroom that prompted an evacuation at Mayde Creek High School this morning at about 10:45 a.m., school officials said today.
Principal Cazilda C. Steele alerted parents of the incident via Katy ISD campus eNews this afternoon.
She said the students could not be evacuated outside due to adverse weather conditions. Instead they were moved out of the main building and into gyms at Mayde Creek, located at 19202 Groschke Road.
The Katy area was under the onslaught of torrential downpours through most of the morning. The Katy Fire Department was on hand to assist in the evacuation process and everything went smoothly, Steele said.
We were out of class for a little more than an hour but all students were served lunch and we were on a revised bell schedule for the remainder of the day. There was never any immediate danger to any students or staff. KISD Maintenance and the Katy Fire Department did a very good job in helping us get back to normal. MCHS staff also did a good job monitoring and directing students despite the rain.
A similar incident happened last year at Cinco Ranch High School.
Why is it always the restroom? Were any of you affected by this? Leave a comment.
