Katy Fire Department to host blood drive Aug. 20

The Katy Fire Department will sponsor a blood drive from 2-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 in the fire station meeting room.

Anyone attempting to donate blood will receive a free pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream, according to a news release, which also states all blood types are needed.

To schedule an appointment, call Allyson Patterson at 832-314-2262 or email apatterson@giveblood.org. Commit for Life members who keep their scheduled appointment will earn an additional 200 Commit for Life points. Walk-ins also are welcome.

The Katy Fire Department is at 1417 Avenue D.

According to American Red Cross guidelines, potential donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and may not have donated blood in the last 56 days. Guidelines no longer specify an upper age limit as long as donors are well with no restrictions or limitations to their physical activities. Other aspects of each potential donor's health history are discussed as part of the donation process before any blood is collected. Each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood count are measured.
